[Building Materials] (Surface Burning Characteristics) (Plastic) Foamed Plastic

GENERAL

This category covers foamed plastic in the form of factory-produced boards, panels, tile and form units, and ingredients for use in forming foamed plastics in the field, Classified as to surface burning characteristics as indicated in the individual Classification Mark on, or in connection with, the product.

In order to establish a Classification, foamed plastic intended for field spray application must initially be investigated as applied to uncoated high density (nominal 110 pcf), 1/4 in. thick inorganic reinforced cement with flame spread and smoke developed values of 0. Foamed plastic may also be investigated as applied to other surfaces or substrates.

Foamed plastic intended for a field poured-in-place or frothed-in-place installation is tested in a board form.

In order to achieve the Classification shown in the Classification Mark for the field sprayed, poured-in-place or frothed-in-place systems, the indicated ingredients must be utilized and the specified thickness and density of the finished product must be maintained.

Foamed plastic intended for field spray, poured-in-place or frothed-in-place installations are intended to be installed in conformance with the manufacturer's installation instructions accompanying the product to achieve proper material cure and coverage.

Individual Classifications for molded foamed plastic form units do not include nonmetallic components, other than the foam plastic form.

The Classifications are confined to the materials themselves and do not pertain to the structures in which the materials may be installed.

Unless otherwise indicated, the thermal conductivity, vapor permanence, acoustical and other properties have not been investigated.

The toxicity of the products of combustion and other properties have not been investigated.

Authorities Having Jurisdiction should be consulted before installation.

RELATED PRODUCTS

Foamed plastic investigated for use as a component in roofing systems intended to afford protection to the roof deck from an external fire exposure, i.e., fire from an adjacent building, is covered under Roofing Systems (TGFU).

Foamed plastic investigated for use in a roof deck assembly intended to resist flame propagation as a result of an internal fire exposure, i.e. directed on the underside of the roof deck assembly, is covered under Roof Deck Construction Materials, Foamed Plastic (TJBX).

Foamed plastic utilized as core materials in building panels investigated with respect to surface burning characteristics is covered under Building Units (BLBT).

Panels incorporating foamed plastic core materials investigated with respect to their ability to resist damage under severe fire exposures, such as might originate in the contents of an industrial type building, are covered under Insulated Wall Constructions (NYVQ).

Foamed plastic investigated for use as a component of a fire resistance assembly with respect to resistance to interior fire exposure is covered under Foamed Plastic (CCVW).

For room fire test classification of foamed plastic, see Foamed Plastic (OERU) under Interior Building Constructions (OEQX).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

For additional information, see Plastic (BRKZ), Surface Burning Characteristics (BIKT) and Building Materials (AABM).

REQUIREMENTS

The basic standard used to investigate products in this category is ANSI/UL 723, "Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials."

ADJUNCT SERVICES

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) provides a service for the Classification of foamed plastic that not only meets the appropriate requirements of UL but also has been investigated in accordance with the following ASTM standards:

In addition to the surface burning characteristics, where indicated in the individual Classifications, the foamed plastic may have also been tested in accordance with selected test methods contained in ASTM C578- 04a , "Standard Specification for Preformed, Cellular Polystyrene Thermal Insulation." This test method contains specifications relating to density, thermal resistance, compressive strength, flexural strength, water vapor permeability, water absorption, dimensional stability, oxygen index and dimensional tolerances.

In addition to the surface burning characteristics, where indicated in the individual Classifications, the foamed plastic has also been Classified in accordance with ASTM D1929-96, "Standard Test Method for Ignition Properties of Plastics."

UL MARK

The Classification Mark of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. on the product, package of products, or bulk shipment certificate is the only method provided by UL to identify products manufactured under its Classification and Follow-Up Service.

The Classification Mark appears on the cartons of factory-produced blocks, boards, form units, panels and tile. The Classification Mark for these products includes the UL symbol, the word "CLASSIFIED" above the UL symbol (as illustrated in the Introduction of this Directory), and the following additional information:

FOAMED PLASTIC SURFACE BURNING CHARACTERISTICS

+
Control No.
+ Flame spread and smoke developed values applicable to the product

or

The Classification Mark appears on the containers of foamed plastic ingredients intended for field applications. The Classification Mark for these products includes the UL symbol, the word "CLASSIFIED" above the UL symbol (as illustrated in the Introduction of this Directory), and the following additional information:

FOAMED PLASTIC INGREDIENTS SURFACE BURNING CHARACTERISTICS

++
Control No.

++ In addition to the flame spread and smoke developed values, the Classification Mark also incorporates the manufacturer's designation for the specific ingredient within the marked container, the designation for the other ingredients with which it must be reacted, and the thickness and density of foamed plastic to which the surface burning characteristics are applicable.

or

The Classification Mark appears on a bulk shipment certificate for foamed plastic or foamed plastic ingredients shipped directly from the manufacturer to a construction site. The Classification Mark for these products includes the UL symbol, the word "CLASSIFIED" above the UL symbol (as illustrated in the Introduction of this Directory), and the product information for FOAMED PLASTIC or FOAMED PLASTIC INGREDIENTS stated above, as appropriate.

Products that have also been investigated to ASTM C578-04a and/or ASTM D1929-96 will include the statement "ALSO CLASSIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH *."
